Australia's growth. There are many books that are controversial and others describing the comedy inherent in the game. All very collectible and with autographs attached they will become, in time, memorabilia.
Autograph collecting is becoming more and more popular, particularly with signed cricket bats and autographed team sheets. With so many Nations now playing cricket at an international level it is possible to gain a good collection of autographed items at a very reasonable cost.
American cricket memorabilia is another area keenly sort after, but usually extremely scarce. Early Lithographs relating to cricket are almost impossible to obtain prior to 1840. However from this date to the early 1900's are more common and are perfect for framing.
Anything pertaining to Imperial Forces Cricket is snapped up at almost any price at auctions throughout the Commonwealth. A terrific category for the new collector.
It is relatively easy to purchase items of sports memorabilia and particularly cricket collectibles over the last four decades, but try and obtain a cricket ball signed by the Demon Spofforth the great Australian legend and icon!
This is not to suggest that modern material does not have its place in any great collection, it certainly does. The important thing is to find the items that are scarce and not production limited editions that are issued in their thousands. A prime example of this is cricket bats that were signed between 1970 and 1990. These are almost always clearly signed with fine tipped pens in straight lines that are readable. Importantly the signatures stay intact indefinitely. By contrast look at a Modern production line “ limited edition” with its beautiful illegible and very unattractive black texture scribble. In my opinion, not worth the price of the bat itself, and will certainly never be considered a prized piece of Collectable Cricket Memorabillia...
